Ulpiana dates from prehistoric times, but only reached its peak in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD as a Roman municipium named Ulpiana Splendidissima. A strategic location, fertile land and rich mines in the vicinity have makes the city the most important center of Dardania. Destroyed by an earthquake, the city was rebuilt by Justinian I and renamed Justiniana Secunda.
