On top of a gently sloping hill stands the fortress of Novobërdë (also known as name of the Fortress of Artana) which is a well-preserved remnant of the region's past glory. Cited for First time in 1319 as Nuovo Monte, the urban center developed within the fortress walls and quickly gained importance due to its mineral wealth. Commercial and mining center, Novobërdë reached its peak in the 15th century. For a time, the city minted its own coins from coin, calledGrossi Di Novoberda
